Del Carmen a small coastal municipality in the province of Surigao del Norte

In celebration of #EarthDay, I hereby present #VoicesPH – two short films featuring coastal municipalities in the #Philippines in the frontlines of #ClimateChange and #PlanetaryHealth. These films are part of my #HarvardDrPH thesis and were screened during my presentation at Harvard early this month.

The first case study is Del Carmen – a small coastal municipality in the province of Surigao del Norte that is already facing the initial manifestations of climate change such as sea level rise, prolonged droughts, and extreme weather events like typhoons and flooding. These changes in turn lead to myriad health effects such as resurgence of infectious diseases and threats to community nutrition. Despite numerous chronic challenges, the town has started to mount different responses – including in the health sector – to build resilience and adapt to the effects of climate change, but much more still need to be done. The story of Del Carmen is everybody’s story – help me spread this film to inspire action around the world! #ClimateChangesHealth

I send my deepest gratitude to the people of the Municipality of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte, Philippines, especially Mayor Coors Coro and Dr. Joy Vizconde. My special thanks to my awesome team – Anna Sasil and Owen Atendido!
